On this page you can find grade-level specific information about the Summer Reading Program at Winston Salem Christian School.  Please make sure you have the books with you for the first few weeks of school!

LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER READING
Lower School students should find fun in summer activities; one of the greatest components should be reading! At Winston Salem Christian School, we have created an exciting Summer Reading Challenge designed to foster a love of reading and keep young minds engaged during the break.

Our challenge encourages students to read 20,000 pages collectively. Students can choose from our list of diverse age-appropriate books catering to various interests and reading levels. Join us in making this summer a season of literary discovery and joy as our students explore new worlds, build their reading skills, and embark on unforgettable adventures through books!

MIDDLE SCHOOL (RISING GRADES 6-8) SUMMER READING
We want our students to pursue life-long learning habits. One of the greatest components of academic development is reading. Winston Salem Christian School is proud to announce a summer reading list that will encourage students to remain academically engaged throughout the summer. Be careful, you may even enjoy some of these books!

RISING 6TH GRADERS

Welcome to Middle School English at WSCS! Though the school year is over, it is already time to prepare for next year. You are required to read 2 books this summer and write about each book. Here are some reasons why we have a Summer Reading program at WSCS:

  • It is important to develop habits of reading! The more you read, the better reader you will become. Reading is important in all subjects, and it increases academic success!
  • Reading quality literature helps us to expand our vocabulary, introduce us to different cultures and perspectives, and think deeply about important topics.
  • Reading can help us grow in our faith and knowledge of scripture. Developing strong reading and literacy skills can help us read and interpret the Bible, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of our faith in Jesus Christ and the theological principals of Christianity.
  • Reading common books over the summer will help us start off the school year with content to discuss. We’ll be able to start literature discussions right away! All rising 6th graders are required to read the two books listed below:

Stella by Starlight by Sharon Draper

Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis

For each book, you must write at least a 3-paragraph reflection. You may handwrite this reflection on a piece of notebook paper, or you may type and print your reflection. This will be collected on the first Friday back at school for a grade. Be sure to do your best scholarly work on this assignment! Show off everything you already know about writing. As you write your reflection assignment, consider answering some of these questions: What did you think of the book? Who were some of the main characters? Were you surprised by any of the events in the book? What do you think is the overall message/theme that this book communicates? Would you recommend that someone read this book? Bring both summer reading books to English Class beginning the first day of school.
