What's it like to be a new student at WSCS?

Transferring to Winston-Salem Christian was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The opportunity that WSCS has and will provide me with is far beyond what any other public school can provide. WSCS offers numerous opportunities depending on your interests such as sports, scholarships, volunteering, etc. When my mom and I heard all of the different classes and opportunities that WSCS provides when we toured the school, it was a done deal.

I already feel like I am part of the Lions family after only two weeks at the school, WSCS feels like a second home for me, and I am not just saying that to say that for this blog. The teachers here feel like regular people because while they care about your education, they care about your future after graduating even more, which is huge. I can go up to any teacher here and have a genuine conversation and immediately tell they truly care about you. I can tell that the bonds I have and will build with my teachers will last forever.

Every student here is super friendly, funny and easy to talk to and get along with because most share the same interests as me. When you are around people that share the same interests, it brings out the best in that person because everybody has the same drive, determination and goals, which pushes you and makes you work even harder.

The most unique thing about WSCS is all of the international students. There are students from all over the country including France, Brazil, Germany, Czech Republic, etc. In my AP English Language class, there were six different languages just in that class alone. It’s really cool listening to the international students’ conversations with one another, and I’ve been really impressed on how fluent they are in English.

What sold me the most about transferring to WSCS, was the almost 24/7 access you have to the basketball gym, weight room, treatment and recovery areas, etc. Everyday I walk over to the gym and hoop with a couple of my friends during our lunch period, which I look forward to everyday. If you want to shoot baskets late throughout the night, before or right after school, you are able to, as long as there are not any practices or games going on.

The transition for me was super easy, even coming from a school that has over 2500 kids to WSCS that has roughly 160 upper school students. Most of my classes have between 10-15 students, which I prefer because it helps me focus more and get all of my work done.

When I was applying for classes, a huge smile came across my face, because of the different, unique and wide variety of electives WSCS provides that most public schools don’t. WSCS offers unique elective classes such as Esports, broadcasting, video production, marketing, etc.

What I noticed and have really liked is all of the teachers incorporate God in their teachings, helping us learn more about who God is. I have also really enjoyed going to chapel every Thursday because it feels like a normal Sunday church service with the music and different pastors that preach to us.

The first three days of school, we traveled to South Carolina for camp. It helped me get to know and build relationships with some of the students and teachers instead of going to school the first day and not knowing anyone. We played different activities with our group including soccer, sand volleyball, basketball, swimming in the lake and other games. It rained almost the entire time at camp, but luckily the basketball court was covered, so more than half the time I was playing basketball, so I had a lot of fun despite the rain.

I actually like wearing uniforms because everybody looks nice, professional and classy. The dress code policy is super easy to follow, everyday I wear dri-fit khaki shorts with either a white or black polo or dri-fit collared shirt so that I always feel super comfortable.

I am so glad I was able to transfer to Winston-Salem Christian because the school already feels like a second home. The teachers and students are like family already because they are all super cool, funny and friendly. All the classes are super fun, interesting and engaging. Everything about WSCS is amazing and there is nothing negative that I can say about the school. WSCS is a smaller, family type community that truly cares about you and your future/goals and my experience so far has been nothing short of fantastic.
